Aram Tanis

Aram Tanis was born in Seoul, but spent his formative years in The Netherlands, where he lived in a predominantly white neighborhood and attended schools that lacked diversity. As a result of his experiences, Aram Tanis' photographic work centers around themes of “Isolation” and “Anonymity”.

'In Search for Shadows of Things Lost' has been made during a 33 days as Artist in Residence at the GGz Breburg, where he ate and lived together with the residents. GGz Breburg houses mentally vulnerable people who undergo intensive therapies and receive help here.

He soon became part of the community and started hearing more and more stories. There seems to be a universal sense of hope captured in some of the works in the series, while others seem to emphasize hopelessness. By playing with light and shadow, he manages to capture the highs and lows of living with a mental vulnerability. In this series, he immerses himself in his surroundings, the things he sees that others may not see and the people he meets. His work therefore gives a glimpse of what the world looks like from a different perspective, while also highlighting those elements that are universal.

Aram Tanis studied photography in Amsterdam and Seoul.

In Aram Tanis' work he describes and researches societies on the basis of the cities people built and inhabit. In Tanis' work, urban
landscapes, people, animals and objects are symbols of what is happening in our world and how we adapt to these changes. 'Isolation' and anonymity' are important themes within his work, but also make people aware of certain things they often overlook.

Tanis exhibited all around the world including at Kunstverein für Rheinlande und Westfalen (Düsseldorf / DE), Siemens Sanat (Istanbul / TR), Frontviews (Berlin / DE), Gallery Korea (New York / USA), Ginza Graphic Gallery (Tokyo / JP), Witte de With (Rotterdam / NL), Misulsegye Gallery (Seoul / KR) and Frankfurter Kunstverein (Frankfurt / DE).
